What is third party liability insurance?

According to the definition, third party liability insurance is property type insurance, the purpose of which is to protect the owners of all vehicles against liability in connection with damage occurring both in road and standstill traffic. It is worth mentioning here that civil liability insurance provides compensation for any damage that has been made to third parties, and such damage includes not only the vehicle but also the health and personal property of the injured party. Third party liability insurance is an insurance required to drive a vehicle, which is why many people criticize the obligation to spend several hundred zlotys on insurance each year. However, this insurance allows us to navigate the road knowing that by causing some unfortunate event, we will not have to pay anyone compensation out of our own money, which would often end up in huge debts and clearing all savings.

What damages can be covered by third party liability insurance?

The scope of benefits covered by third party liability insurance is very wide. In the first place, the insurance covers all costs related to the health of the injured person, such as treatment, rehabilitation, all medications, and even compensation for income lost by the injured party. The insurance covers all costs related to damage caused to the vehicle, i.e. repair, replacement of parts, as well as the costs of renting a replacement vehicle. As previously mentioned, the civil liability insurance also covers the cost of damaged property, so if the phone or laptop is damaged as a result of an accident, the insurer will cover all costs related to the purchase of new equipment. It is worth remembering that if you have valid civil liability insurance, even then, the insurer may, in exceptional circumstances, apply to the person causing the accident for reimbursement. This type of situation may occur when the driver was under the influence of alcohol during the accident or the accident was caused intentionally. The insurer will also apply for reimbursement of compensation to persons who committed a crime on the occasion of the road accident, such as running away from the scene of the accident. People who do not have valid insurance will have to pay compensation unconditionally.

Do we have to have third party liability insurance and what can happen if we do not have it?

As mentioned before, liability insurance is an insurance that we must take out on a mandatory basis. When we are driving a vehicle with an invalid third party liability policy, we face a very severe fine, which is additionally increased every year. Currently, the owner of a car with no insurance cover for a maximum of 3 days will pay a fine of PLN 900. If this happens from 4 to 14 days, the driver will have to pay PLN 2,250. However, if our policy is invalid for more than 2 weeks, we will have to pay a fine of up to PLN 4,500. In the event of delaying the renewal of his policy and causing an accident, it is the owner of the vehicle who caused the accident that must take into account the payment of all funds necessary to cover the damage.
